April 01, 2008

Well, I’m just starting to feel better from last week’s treatment, so I guess its time for another one. The nurse called today to say tomorrow’s chemo (4/2) is a “go.” Although my blood counts are still delicate, they are good enough to continue at an accelerated pace.

And since there isn’t much else to update you on, I thought it might be a good time to begin introducing you to my family and put a face to these names you’ve been reading about.

I will start with my sister, Catherine. Last week she was here to visit from South Dakota, accompanying her husband who was attending a medical seminar. She is mother of 6 (5 boys and 1 girl), 4 are still living at home, and she homeschools two of them. Needless to say, her plate is quite full!

But that did not stop her last October when she dropped everything to come to my aid after my first surgery. She spent the last night in the hospital with me (along with sister Carolyn), then helped me transition back into the house. The transition was not short of things to do: organizing appointments, medication prescriptions, emergency room visits, food and nutrition. As a registered nurse, her medical background was a Godsend.

Every morning she came to my bedside to check on how I fared through the night and began the day with morning prayer. Then each evening she closed the day with bedtime prayers.

We all had so much to learn about this journey. But as full as her plate already is, she and her husband, with their medical backgrounds, naturally have taken an active role in being a central source of research. They’ve spent countless hours learning and educating the rest of the family, interpreting medical jargon in layman’s terms.

During her visit last week, she was able to see the fruits of all the prayers being sent my way. I had energy enough to get out of the house with her for a few field trips, attend mass and cook a couple meals. We had a very special time.

Thank you, sister Catherine, for your prayers, care and attention. And thanks to all of you for your continued prayers during my battle and for all the cards and letters. Good things are in the works.
God loves you!
Maureen

Beautiful baldy!
Cynthia Sampers
Only you Maureen! can look so beautiful with or without hair! You are such a cutie! I had a little girl who is in remission from leukemia and I think she should get her ears pierced so she can wear earrings like yours, looking rather posh! You could be a rock star!
We continue to hold you and your family in prayer and raise your name at STB on a regular basis, so I know others have added your name to their prayer lists.
The joke was on us Minnesotans today: we the April fools: a snow storm that dropped about 7 inches of snow on us! wish I was joking!

Ooops! Can't believe I had one of my major Senior Moments in the middle of my last posting - AND that I didn't catch it! My apologies to you and to Catherine - I KNEW that was her name, and why I said Carolyn is beyond me (does it count that it did start with the same letter?!?).Oh me..."Old age isn't for sissies" takes on a new meaning each day! With love, and a red face!...Charlene

Wishes for a Wonderful Wednesday! Joan Lentner
As I read your latest update about your sister Catherine, it reminded me of my special sisters and parents who surrounded me with love while I dealt with my cancer issue. Their presence was so reassuring in the tough moments...and you could "feel" their love. That in itself is such a great blessing. Of course, I can't complain about my brothers because they showed their love in ways to. The bond between sistes is so great. I am encouraged and so happy everytime I read your updates, because the news is more and more encouraging. I am so truly happy for you. Prayers are vital to the recovery, so be assured that mine have not stopped and are going, going, going for you Maureen. Thanks for being an inspiration to so many people. Remember that it's one day at a time and God truly does give us all that we need.

Spring is in the air! Kathy Miller
Hi Maureen! I don't think even the most beautiful spring flowers hold a candle to how beautiful you are! The picture of you and Catherine is wonderful. What a dynamic duo! Add one more sister in the picture and you could be "Charlie's Angels," kicking all opponents square in the ***. Keep up the fight! You are going to conquer! Kathy

Thank You Maureen! Catherine Billion
Maureen, Excuse me...I believe that I was the recipient of YOUR generosity! I wish people could have witnessed you cooking, chauffeuring, and making sure that I was having a nice break from work, while also covering the needs of your family! I also wish that people around the world could have heard you singing in Mass Sat. evening! Now that was glorious, with strength and clarity! I am safely back home, and miss you already! I have great fresh memories to go on, as well as the thanksgiving I feel in my heart for you and your family and for your recovery.
Take good care! Love, catherine

Thank you so much Elaine DuBois-Karr
It is wonderful to be virtually introduced to your sister Catherine. She is such a treasure. I hope your treatment went well today and pray for your continued recovery. I am off to Boston for a business trip that I have extended to visit my baby sister Elise. We plan to spend the weekend doing sister stuff and I am sure we will be up all night giggling over childhood memories.
God Bless you and your lovely sister. Much love, Elaine

Sending hugs! Kathy Miller
Hi Maureen! Just wanted to send hugs your way...I'm thinking of you all and miss you very much. Many times a day I whisper a little prayer for you. Much, much love....Kathy

Go Jayhawks! Molly Casey
Hi Maureen! I'm sorry I haven't left a message in quite some time, but it doesn't mean I haven't been thinking of you. I just read Catherine's post on the Jayhawks! Well, being that I'm a KU alum and I live an hour away from San Antonio, I went to the games and witnessed the incredible win! It was so much fun. I kept saying prayers and Memphis would miss their free throws! "Free throws win games!"
I hope you're doing well. Looking forward to another update. And congrats on the news about Joe and Katie!!!

Greetings for a wonderful Friday ...Maureen!!! Joan Lentner
You would love it in Minnesota. Brainerd got 12+ inches of snow. Mpls had a lot of rain so we only have a tiny white snow cover. Looking at the earth from the 53rd floor is really pretty. Kind of reminds me of Christmas...that's good because you get presents :)
You have made it another week. Whatever you have needed God has provided. We continue with our mega prayers and he gives you an abundance of gifts to get thru life...one day at a time. We are all still praying and sending the best healing vibes your way Maureen. You are awesome and such an inspiration (we also know you've had a lot of hard moments). So wishing you a fabulous Friday.
The most important thing is that God loves you and is with you right this very second.

Maureen - Joan Lentner
I was at a 3 day spiritual weekend and the theme of the retreat was on how much God Loves us and is there for us. So just know that he is with you the very moment...and I'm praying!!!
Wishing you a wonderful day. Complete with peace, better health, smiles and tons of love coming your way.
It's the week before taxes are due and it's quite stressful and wild, but we will get thru it. :)

How About Those K. U. JayHawks!!!??? Catherine Billion
Dear Maureen,
I hate to rub it in, but they were my pick, because Andrew will be residing at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, starting in August! We were all sooooo excited they won. I was rooting for UCLA too, for you, up until they lost. We are praying for your CA 125 to have dropped to normal by the 14th. This will be a most special week for you and our family, Maureen.
I love you lots, catherine

Good News, and Some More Good News!

As you can see in the picture (and ultrasound in the corner), we have a little surprise on the way. Yes, our son and his new wife, Joe and Katie Casey, are expecting their first child, and Mike & I are going to be Grandparents!!!!! Even more reason to fight for life. They surprised us over Webcam while we were having dinner at Katie's parents home. I’m handling the news quite well. But Mike is going to need encouragement. He would love to hear that he "looks like the youngest grandfather ever" and he’s just "way too young to be changing diapers again!" God has so truly blessed all our families with this coming event.

The other good news is that the new chemo cocktail is working. My CA125 count is down to 65 (normal is below 35, and remember I started at 1600). My weight is up to 99lbs, and I’m forgetting to take my painkillers, which means my pain is diminishing. Because of the lighter chemo doses, my hair is coming in, resembling the Sinead O’Connor style. I’ve courageously abandoned my headcovers hoping people might mistake me for a rock star. All of these improvements are quite a contrast from early January.

My sister Catherine is back in the valley for a visit. Her husband is attending a medical seminar, so it worked out perfectly for her to accompany him. She was with me in the chemo room yesterday to witness another graduation as well as two first-timers. A recent graduate came in to share her battle stories, words of encouragement and coaching to the newbies. What an awesome group of people!

Although my blood counts were pretty good yesterday they gave me a lighter dose again (this was treatment “a” of cycle “2”), but tentatively moved my next treatment (“b” of cycle “2”) up a week to be on next Wednesday, April 2nd. I’ll be very pleased if we can continue on an accelerated schedule; the sooner this is over with, the better!

Jesus Christ is Risen! Happy Easter!
God is so good!
Maureen

You are both definately to young to be GRANDPARENTS!!!! Cynthia Neuman

Wow! What wonderful news! Congratulations to Katie, Joe and the rest of the family. You now have to find some tiny clubs to show your new grandchild how to golf. All our love and best wishes to the whole gang! love, The Klimes Family

Grandma Maureen and Grandpa Mike Charlie Herf
Maureen
Congratulations to the expectant grandparents and especially to Katie and Joe. How exciting and you will win the fight and be the best babysitter they could have-ever ! Patti can give you information but generally you get things for them, spoil, them return them to parents spoiled and tired and do not have to worry about college tuition. Patti loves her "grandma" role and you will too. Anything your kids did to you, you describe to the grandchildren so they can implement and you can get even and be appreciated !
Wonderful news and hope you continue to do well.
Patti and Charlie

Double Good News!! Elizabeth Crow

What a great day it is! Nancy Gordon
That is the BEST news! You made my day! There is so much to look forward to. Oh my gosh- what a nice looking family, Joe and Katie and even the little spark of energy that will be your grandchild is already adorable. I think the baby already looks like grandpa... be sure and tell Mike that. Life is such an adventure.... and think of the stories you can tell that baby, about life and living and your experience of fighting for it. Thank you God! What a great day it is!

Grandma Maureen!!! Jan Larson

It must be such a relief to have those counts continue to come down. That is just wonderful to hear. Your body must be working overtime to get that “bad stuff” out of your system. Good job!!!!!!!!!

Hi Maureen and Mike - what great news! I've been watching the Care Page waiting for an update on your condition and am thrilled at the great results you're seeing. It's been a tough battle, but you are on the short side of it now.
We have to say, never before in the history of mankind has there been a younger looking set of grandparents than you and Mike (do you think that will help him???)!
Thanks again for the update. As always, the thoughts and prayers are ongoing.
All our love,

G And G Casey Mary jo Christensen
Dear Grandparents Casey, Congratulations on the good news--both the chemo and the baby to be. Thought for a minute I had the wrong page. You will love being "grands" even if it is an older step in life. Our oldest is 24, so we have been at it for a long time. Glad the chemo is doing its job. Such a year you have had. We care. Dave and Mary Jo

AWESOME!! Charlene Rex
WOW, Maureen - SO MUCH GOOD NEWS!! You've come SO FAR with those TERRIFIC low numbers, and now a grandchild on the way!!! Our heartiest, most heartfelt congratulations on both counts! We're picturing you and your family all with big smiles, happy hearts, and MAJOR good endorphins! (We can feel the light and love from here!) Summer's just around the corner, and Joe, Katie, and Baby Casey will be here before you know it! (We're pretty excited, ourselves, about being Great Aunt Bee and Great Uncle Bill, and are so looking forward to seeing everyone in October.) Much love and many hugs to Mike and the boys, and save a BIG chunk of love and hugs for you! Charlene and Bill.

Grandparenting Linda & Max Selig
I am just thrilled for both you AND Mike. Believe me there is nothing as special as a grandchild. They give you immortalilty and much joy. Mike will get ready the first time he holds the baby. And he will be lost if it is a little girl. God willing you will be restored to good health by then with the strength to chase that little person around. Congratulations. Lin and Max

It's About Time! :) Kathy Miller
Congratulations, Caseys! We're happy to hear the news of Joe and Katie expecting a little one! They are in our prayers, and so are you! I wish I'd sat still long enough for my mom to teach me how to crochet a baby blanket! I remember how she laughed when she saw Joe's red afghan so "well-worn." We send love and good wishes and prayers...daily prayers!

March 12, 2008

Rejoice in the Lord, for He is good! The biopsy results showed no cancer cells!!! Our prayers were answered, yet again. Now I know what agony one goes through when they find a lump, and have to wait for results. Absolute Hell!

I unexpectedly received chemo yesterday (the nurse had an open chair, so I took it). "Plan B" will be treatments every 2 weeks, provided my blood counts allow it. If the cancer responds to these new drugs, and once the CA125 tumor count result is normal (below 35), I will finish up with either 4 or 6 more treatments. If we stay on this track, I should be finished by the end of the summer (that includes a few weeks of delay).

I will know results from the next CA125 test on March 25th, and the next treatment is scheduled for March 26th.

Good things are in the works! Praise God and Virgin Mary, who watch over us.

My everlasting thanks for all your prayers.
Maureen

congratulations Tom Sadvary
Maureen,
What fantastic news! You and family are in our prayers. PLease let us know how we can help you in your courageous journey.

Greetings from Norway Anita Solberg Johansen
I miss you Maureen and wish I could have been there. I am so amazed how strong you are – and what a positive attitude! You are truly an inspiration to me.
We are finally seeing the first signs of spring – yes it’s like Minnesota with a tough winter behind us. William and Victor are getting so big (at least I think so) William just turned 4 and Victor is now 1 ½ years old. And they argue over the smallest thing –you would be amazed.
I have been a stay at home mum for years now (working in between the two pregnancies). But I have now started working part time. I like spending time with the boys, even if they sometimes drive their mum crazy :-) I guess I will go back to fulltime this fall.
We are going to my parents house for Easter. I don’t get to see them too often so I’m looking forward to it. My dad just turned 60 yesterday and we will celebrate him when we get home.
Si hi to JP, Connor, Joe & Mike. Miss you all.
Love you, klem Anita

Maureen - you must be smiling with the latest news! Joan Lentner
I to smiled as I read the latest update. Emotionally and physically you have to deal with so much every waking hour of the day (and at night to when sleep doesn't want to come). That 'ol mind sure can play games with us. There is so much light at the end of the tunnel now...you ARE going to make it.
I read this passage recently and shared it with some of my friends who are also struggling with issues.
What is troubling you today? Is your heart burdened because of some problem that threatens to overcome you? Are you filled with anxiety and worry, wondering what will happen next? Listen - as a child of God through faith in Christ, you can turn these over to Christ, knowing that He loves you and is able to help you. don't carry your burden and longer, but bring it "Boldly to the Throne of Grace" --- And Leave it There. That isn't always so easy to do but it's some food for thought. I am sure you have heard it all, I just wanted to encourage you that God is taking care of you and I am praying for you. Wishing you a wonderful day and upcoming weekend.
With such good news I think you should celebrate! I am going to thank God shortly. I will be at church at noon today and will lift you in prayer. Sending love your way.
Joan , LH - Mpls

Happy Easter Maureen...and Mike and the Casey Family!!! Joan Lentner
You continue to come to mind so often and when you do that means you must be lifted for God's blessings. I have learned to appreciate these days of Holy Week leading up to Easter and look forward to each church service. It's funny that when you were young they always seemed so long and would never get over. Now it's time well spent in God's presence.
I am truly hoping that this Easter Sunday finds you filled with strength and good health to enjoy the day with your beautiful family. Your courage during this past 6 months and how you have carried your heavy cross is an example of an earthly journey done with God in your heart, mind and soul. I read your updates and am always inspired when you bring God into the picture, because without him life would definitely be to hard to endure. "He" gives us what we need and God is very good.
From my heart to yours Maureen, I wish you a Happy Happy Easter and all the Blessings each day contains. I will be in church a whole lot and you will be lifted up each time.
Joan , LH-Mpls

Maureen - Belated Happy St. Patrick's Day Joan Lentner
My intentions were good that I was going to get an email off to you yesterday, but it was just to busy at the office. I did however go to Mass at St. Olaf's and lifted you in prayer. Just a few days and Easter will be her. You have really carried a heavy cross throughout this Lenten season. Every step has been difficult, but the blessings of the Holy Week will be upon you. You can count on my mega prayers.
Happy Tuesday...and in a few days the Easter Bunny will be here :) Yummy jelly beans!

=) Jon Bryant

Maureen - Wishing you Strength for the Day! Joan Lentner
I'm hoping you were able to enjoy some of the the Easter services. I lifted you in prayer at each service last week. I played organ for the church by my folks and it was just awesome. The choir was so spirited and it felt so good to play all of the Easter Alleluias. Hoping that this day finds you feeling even stronger both mentally and physically than yesterday. You are so special and that's why we keep the prayers going...to get you thru this bump in the road so you can again feel good...it's coming. Wishing you a wonderful Tuesday (filled with all you want it to be - especially lots of blessings.
Joan , LH - Mpls

What a wonderful surprise!!!!!!! Cynthia Neuman
Maureen,
To see you coming down the stairs towards me at the Suns game on Saturday was the most wonderful gift from God, and on the day before Easter it was truly a blessing. You looked absolutely beautiful. I was speechless as you were coming down the stairs. Couldn't believe it was really you until I had my arms around you. Thank you for coming down to see me. God bless you and your family and also continued strength and healing to you. My heart is still singing praises to the Lord. I hope to see you at a DBacks Game soon. I am at the same place. Tell Mike he looked as handsome as ever also.
Hugs, Hugs and more Hugs to the Family
Cynthia

March 09, 2008

Its been too long since I've posted an update, but there isn't any news yet. On Friday, I found that my doctor is out of town until Wednesday (my next appt date). So I don't expect to hear anything about the biopsy result until then. Tomorrow (Monday) I will have blood tests to determine if I can handle Wednesday's chemo treatment. Its still a waiting game.

So, I'm still just trying to pass the time. The last treatment really knocked me out. My energy has been lower than normal, but I'm still getting around. One thing that will occupy me is getting through the withdrawal effects of the latest pain med I've been on. I first started it while in the hospital in January, but I don't think I need it anymore. I'm clearly addicted, but its time to give it up.

We had a nice evening last night with Mike's Uncle Dick and Aunt Bev Casey from South Dakota. It starting with mass at Blessed Sacramant Church to hear Julie Carrick and her husband perform the music. (Julie is a fabulous vocal and keyboard performer and has about 10 CDs recorded. She has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer, so it was really special to worship with her.) Then we had a nice dinner at the house (outside, if you can believe it). Dick played the Bodhran (Irish drum) along with some Irish music. Given his musical skills, I'm sure he would have played a few scores on the piano, if he had seen it. Yes, there was wine involved.

I will let you know more as soon as I have word. I love you all, Maureen

What A Treat to See You!!! Clint Gibson
Maureen - What a beautiful evening it was to see you and Mike come outside to dine! That was such a special surprise.
We were blessed to be able to see you again, to laugh and visit with you, and to share personal communication again. It was also a blessing to see Mike and to see him enjoy the dinner so much.
Please know you are in our thoughts every day. We look forward to seeing you again soon, maybe to attend the theater together.
Clint

greetings from St. Thomas Becket Cynthia Sampers
Today we celebrated 40 years in the priesthood for Fr. Mike Erlander. Hard to believe that he has spent 17 years of it here with us at St. Thomas Becket, the longest of anywhere he's been. There was some great hospitality following, with strawberries as big as apples! Quite a treat for us from the Northland!
When we saw your Christmas picture, it becomes obvious how long it has been since you lived here as well. One of our girls was so disappointed to see Joe married, she so looked forward to your card arriving and drooling over the handsome young men! Now one less available!
Just want you to know that we think of you often, and will raise you up in prayer tonight: we have a meeting of the Judith Batten Foundation. We provide scholarships to those that might not be able to afford retreats without them.
Keep chippin' away down there, it will time to hit the greens!
Love and Prayers to You,
Cindy and Kevin Sampers

How Fun Elaine DuBois-Karr
Thanks so much for the update. Irish music is so festive that it must have so much fun. Great company and fun music, how wonderful.
Thinking of you all of the time,
Elaine

March Best Wishes Linda & Max Selig
This month is special in so many ways. It's a time for we women to reflect on the lives of so many women who have fought the battle you are facing. Their examples and inspiration should be an example for all of us. Love each day, entertain even when your carpet is dirty, hug your children even when you are busy, delight in a rainy day and sit in the grass with your white pants on!! I know I need reminding when I get frustrated or too busy. I don't want to face your battle but I do want to savor life as if I were. It's too easy for all of us who are well to forget about what is important. I know you will never make that mistake. God Bless you and keep your spirit high. Lin Selig

Great to see you! Denise McClain

St Pat's Greeting Terry Casey
An early St Pat's greeting from Terry and Sharon,
We are in Mpls and felt cheated by not being able to enjoy a bit of Erin Go Bragh with you last night. We could picture the scene as you describe your evening. We were at mass at St Edward's near our hotel last night and discovered that this church was founded by Bishop Dudley. He was a much loved bishop of our diocese in Sioux Falls. We are also aware that Bishop Carlson is here for his father's funeral tomorrow.(Mpls)
Your pharmacist father-in-law says that you should not be worried about those pain patches that you have been using. They may be helpful in ways that you are not aware. At any rate as your PA Kelly about it. We miss you and offer many more prayers. Love, Sharon

You are always in our thoughts and prayers! Debbie Klimes
Sounds like a wonderful evening. I can't wait until we can enjoy an evening outside and celebrate your graduation. Keeping positive and happy thoughts for you and your family. We always keep you in our daily thoughts and prayers.
Lots of love and blessings to you!
The Klimes gang!

Hello Freddie Coseglia
Hello Maureen:
Just wish to say hello. Hopefully, you have been able to spend a little time outdoors of late..as you know the weather has been beautiful and warm.
You are missed by many in the office and we all still ask one another if anyone has spoken with you lately.
In advance...Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Freddie.

Wish I could be there too! Molly Casey
I know my parents have really enjoyed their time in AZ and especially the time with you and Mike. Wish I could be there too! I want to give you a big hug! Wow...Dick and his Irish drum...and WINE?! I bet that was something!
Love you!
Molly

Maureen - Monday 3/10 Joan Lentner
I'm back from Florida and it was a wonderful week away. Since Minnesota has had some abnormlly cool temps this winter, it was so great to be in 80 degree temps all week. Work keeps me really busy and I haven't been able to focus on my prayer life as much as I wanted to this Lenten season. I took time everyday to look at the Gulf Waters, to feel the warmth of the sun, to walk in the sand, to watch some sunsets and to let myself relax. You will be happy to know that you were remembered for sure once a day and most days, many times. Physically is very difficult for you, but the mental mind game is equally as difficult. Been there and done it. I read your latest update and still am very encouraged that with God's love and healing hands you will make it. I wish I could take away the difficult days, but since I can't, my prayers are going, going and gone.
Wishing a better week which is filled with good test results. You are so special and I think of you so often and admire your courage. When you are done with all of the chemo & treatments we will have to have a drink to celebrate.
Joan , LH - Mpls
