October 17, 2007

When I arrived this morning I was encouraged at how rested Maureen looked. The color was back in her cheeks (2 units of blood will do that) and she was sitting up in her bed. We were able to get her into a chair were she sat for a little over an hour. This is a big step. I talked w/ Dr. Janicek who said there was still fluid build-up/retention, which we're working to absorb into her system. Sitting up and moving around will help this. He mentioned he might want to start the IV chemo as early as this Friday, which will help absorb the excess fluids. An IV port was installed this afternoon. Funny story, I was called from my office to come over prior to this procedure to discuss the details. Maureen was not "fully there" and asked for me to come. When a entered the room, 2 nurses were working with her. I looked at her and said, "Maureen, have you been doing drugs again?" She laughed and the nurses didn't know what to think. The port is in and this is an important part of our healing process. According to the Dr., nothing at this point is unexpected and we're progressing just fine. To quote: "she'll get there, one day at a time". I believe this and I ask you to do the same. Your prayers and greetings are an inspiration. "All the Ends of the Earth" are praying for our lovely Maureen. Today I heard from: Japan, Australia and Ireland. That's impressive. Please keep up the good work. The battle continues. In God's love, Mike.

One day at a time... - Colleen Gillespie
Happy to hear Maureen had a restful day. Hope the Casey men are getting some rest too. You all are on my mind all day, but even more so today as we are in Duluth. Eric is working up here and we traveled with him. We are staying on the canal, so I'm going to take the kids down to the park where Mike used to recover after the marathons and we all would feed the birds and watch the ships come in. I love you guys so much. Mike, would you give Maureen a kiss on the forehead from me?
LOVE,
Colleen

Maureen and Mike,
My thoughts and many prayers are with you each day. It's amazing what the Doctors can do. My brother-in-law had abdominal cancer this last year and is recovering very nicely. It's been a long year but with good results. Thanks for sharing your journey. I hope you have a speedy recovery and can get back to the things you love best soon.

Minnesota: Land of 10,000 Pray-ers! - Thomas Kommers
Maureen and Michael, Saddened by the news of Maureen's illness. Encouraged by the details of the surgery and early days of recovery.
Please know that both of you are in my prayers here in Minnesota and that I've enlisted the prayer support of the best "pray-ers" I know: the women and men senior citizens of daily mass here at St. Joseph in Red Wing ranging in ages from early 60's to 101 (that's Fr. Jim Notebaart's mother: Gertrude). Maureen, I know of your steadfast faith in God and your strong spirit. You can do this! You can, with God's help, overcome this challenge. The pioneering spirit that led you and the boys to help found St. Thomas Becket in Eagan will rise again to help you on this journey. May God's healing power be with you, May Jesus be your rock, and May the Holy Spirit fill your heart with courage and peace! Blessings and Love, Fr. Tom Kommers
