November 23, 2007

Mike worked wonders in the kitchen. We were very fortuntate to have been invited to our very good friend's home across the street (Tom & Vicki) for dinner. It was very relaxing (for me, anyway). Mike prepared the turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and even a homemade cranberry chutney....Then he cleaned it all up! Two of the boys (Connor and JP) joined us before dinner heading down to the ASU game. We gave thanks to God for all the goodness He bestows on each of us. How we take our comfortable lives for granted.

My latest hurdle is kicking the pain killers. I've been taking a prescription drug since in the hospital, and it had me hooked! Well, I've been off of it for almost three days, and hopefully there's nothing in sight requiring it again. Symptoms of withdrawal are not fun (constant shakes are the worst) but its also difficult to tell if the the chemo is a contributor.

Hope your holiday was very heartwarming and safe!
Maureen

happy thanksgiving to you and your whole family!!! Patti Herf
MAUREEN, I HOPE YOU DIDN'T RUSH THAT TURKEY WHILE IT THAWED !!! we just returned from a few days in Cabo and i was hoping i'd have an update from you and was so happy to hear that you are even able to do a few things around the house, do'nt take over too many chores right away or you know what will happen... your "men helpers" will disappear...keep up your good work and the prayers are following you everywhere..well, maybe not the laundry room...

Happy Turkey Day!! Cathy Edwards
We hope that you and your family enjoyed a wonderful celebration! I wanted to take a moment today to thank YOU for your Board postings! Although we’ve only met once or twice (we know Mike much better), through your updates I feel like we’ve become close!
As well as updating us all on your progress, they convey your courage, faith and humor.
It is obvious from the numerous messages to you that you are surrounded by an enormous, loving circle of family and friends, a great blessing! I’ve also enjoyed learning about others in your world and have a new kindred spirit in Joan Buckley! Although we’ve never met, we share a similar “first Thanksgiving dinner for the family” experience. I still maintain that my crisis was the result of Webb’s oven (which hadn’t been used in ages), but we ultimately resulted to microwaving individual plates of food in order to finally eat our (late) dinner! Our holiday dinners now come from AJ’s, unless like today we are fortunate to have someone like my wonderful mother-in-law cook for us ;=)
We pray for your continued healing and look forward to your ongoing stories. I think you may even have a book concept on your hands here about all the people you have personally connected through your journey! May God continue to bless you, Cathy & Webb

Casey Family Recital In Chamberlain. Kathy Miller
Hi Maureen,
This is Steve hogging in on Kathy's sign up to say Happy Thanksgiving. Just got a message from Father Bill that the parish center is close to completion and the Kawai piano in Rapid City will soon be delivered. Mary Ann, Sam, Kathy and I shared the cost of the piano and we cannot wait to see it and hear it. I suggested in my email to him that there needs to be a Casey Family Recital to dedicate the Lois Casey Miller Memorial piano. Therefore, tell Mike to start practicing his recital piece while you're watching the turkey thaw out. We'll get Courtney and Kathy to participate as well as any other Casey's that want to be part of the show. Molly and Courtney can relive one of their childhood shows that they made us watch 20 years ago :)
We think of you a lot and wish you all the best this holiday season. See you soon...STEVE

Happy Thanksgiving!! Molly Casey
Just thinking of you on this Thanksgiving. I'm wishing I was in Chamberlain with the family, but I'm alone in Austin this year (thanks to $$ airline tickets). Courtney is in Indy for Steve's sister's wedding. I'm going to run in the Turket Trot tomorrow morning...5 miles should burn some calories before I stuff my face at my friend's place. :) I'm making Grandma Casey's Sweet Potatoes.
I'm still praying for you...hang in there! Love you!
Molly

Thaw -t about you today! Joan Buckley
Oh, Maureen, I am so glad that you are in charge of thawing. That just made me smile and remember! One of my first Tday mistakes (oh, I have made many!) was not thawing out the bird and spending the entire 4 am to 9 am shift on the morning of Thanksgiving "speed thawing" an ice block of a turkey (okay, it was 22 pounds and I figured that it would thaw in the fridge overnight...)Speed thawing, for those who have not called the Butterball emergency line in tears at midnight, involves filling the sink with warm water and placing the turkey in it, flipping it over and then waiting a few minutes, draining the water and repeating until thawed. I am not sure what is so speedy about it - it took a million gallons of water and 5 hours! I hope that made you laugh! After repeatedly burning the rolls and making insufficent amounts of gravy, I now let Basha's do the whole thing. (If you are wondering, Honeybaked Ham does my Christmas.)
Love to you all - a blessed Thanksgiving to your family!
Joan B. (Who else would write about frozen turkeys?)

Leftovers. Kathy Miller
Hi Maureen! Thanks for the update...and I'm so glad you had a good Thanksgiving. Mike is such a wonderful cook! I remember how he loved to bake cookies when he was young...the peanut butter kind with the Hershey's Kiss in the middle. They were the best. I'm not surprised that he knows how to put a turkey dinner together. We wish we could bop over with a pumpkin pie and have a visit, a cup of coffee and share hugs. We miss you all and love you dearly. God bless....Kathy

We Are Thankful For You! Catherine Billion
You are so right that we take so many gifts for granted...as if we are entitled to them! Your sharing the recent leg of your journey has helped all of us who know you, to be thankful to the Maker and Giver of all good gifts. Remember when all of us would line up and compare our tummies after eating Thanksgiving dinner...who's had grown the most? The prize...that last piece of pumpkin pie?
Lots of Love to All!

Toast to Maureen! Lisa Lavely
Happy Thanksgiving Maureen! We had a nice day yesterday, aunts, uncles, cousins & parents joined our family for dinner. Tom cooked the turkeys, one roasted & one fried, and I did the rest, with help from the kids. I even got compliments on the stuffing - I was so happy, I hate to cook! We had your special garlic mashed potatoes again this year too. Of course they were a hit! During dinner, we said a special toast in your honor, wishing for a speedy recovery and continued happiness. We all have so much to be thankful for, life is such an amazing gift!
Glad to hear you kicked the painkillers, they are necessary at times, but can be a bit tricky. You remember Tom had that same struggle after his back surgery - good job Maureen, another hurdle gone!
Lisa

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. Cindy Adams
Maureen, Mike and family,
I've been thinking a lot about you and all you've been going through. You are sooooo courageous!!! I check up on you a couple of times a week with Terry and Sharon in addition to reading the care page updates. It's great to hear you are feeling a little better and getting those numbers to improve. Keep hanging in there. (Tell Conner I miss seeing him the summers, he was such a joy to visit with!) With thoughts and prayers, Cindy Adams

Happy Thanksgiving! Nancy Gordon

Thinking about you, Valerie Bisbee
Maureen -I just learned about your battle. I want you to know that we are thinkng about you and sending our prayers. We will let Mike know that we are here to help in anyway, if possible. I'm happy to hear that you are doing better and fighting hard. Please let me know if you want company or any other support.

Hey, Kiddo! Virginia Casey

Maureen - The Blessings of another day! Joan Lentner
It's the start of another week and almost a week that you have been off of the painkillers. I can only imagine how difficult each tiny step forward is...but you are doing it and now we will be praying to have you healthy for the upcoming Christmas holidays. I was up at the folks and we had 42 people - it was so much fun to be with family. My mother is quite the cook & baker and I hope someday to be as good as her. Sounds like Mike's skills are comparable. So happy to hear that you enjoyed Thanksgiving...yes, we all do take a lot for granted when live is good and there aren't any bumps in the road. Wishing you a day where your heart is lighter and a smile is on your face. It's always so great to hear about your progress forward, because one day you will be well! Yes, you will and we will keep the prayers going. :)

Happy Thanksgiving! Mary Grogan
We missed seeing you for our annual visit Wednesday night. After huddling around a fire at our earlier Thanksgiving Eve parties, you would have appreciated the perfect night we had this year. I didn't know Mike was such a cook. What a treat! Sending you healing thoughts... Mary Jo

Love you you! Jeanne Hassel
Glad to hear your Thanksgiving was enjoyable! We are back in Sioux Falls after a few days in Chamberlain. Thanksgiving was very nice - with the traditional Football Game in the backyard. Greg and Dick pulled a few things trying to keep up with Ryan Casey. I am also feeling a few aches and pains as I was to keep up with Ryan's girlfriend Erin... to no avail! Oh well it was fun. Thought of you all and prayed for you too. We love you!
Jeanne, Greg, Claire, Anna and Maria
