November 01, 2007

I apologize for not posting for a couple days. Never assume the news is bad when I fail to post. I was on a business trip to Houston this week and busy as a result. Maureen's recovery continues. Her strength improves each day. She's eating a little more, walking around and joking. Yesterday was Halloween and Maureen held to her tradition of watching "Young Frankenstein" and eating one Almond Joy. So you see, we're getting there. The fluid buildup continues daily and we had to have her "tapped" again yesterday. This is uncomfortable and becoming a nuisance. Tomorrow (Friday) they will install a catheter to drain this continuously. We had thought the chemo 1 would slow this buildup down, but it hasn't yet. Doctor Janicek is confident that Chemo 2 will do this. Chemo 2 is scheduled for November 13 and 14.

We've had such great support. Thank you all for cards, flowers and meals. It all helps. A special thank you to Maureen's sister Catherine, who's been with us a week and will head home to her family today. Thank you Billion family for sharing such a spiritual caregiver. You have no idea the difference she's made for all of us. I'm also grateful to my mom, Sharon, for being here. She knows how to "run a ship" and really has made a difference. She'll be with us a few more days. I understand several more sisters of Maureen are staging their visits. This really helps us all. When Maureen gets better, we intend to make this up to all of you. In the meantime, know that you are doing God's work and making a difference in our lives. Thank you. Mike.

BRAVA, DIVA!!!! BRAVA!!!! Every day is so meaningful, and today is especially grand, hearing from you, Maureen! You are already giving us all a special gift...teaching us how to have faith, patience and love for those who are here for us. Again, I say BRAVA!!!!

I love to watch Young Frankenstein on Halloween too! We did not get to watch last night, however, because Tom insisted on decorating the front entry as a "haunted castle." We sat out front to hand out candy, watch the kids get scared and enjoy some wine...so that was fun too.

It is wonderful to hear that you are feeling better and enjoying some of your favorite traditions. Laughter really is great medicine, keep it up! We pray for you each day & are so thankful for the updates.

Hello from Maureen!!!!

Hello everyone! This is Maureen. Here I am!!!! I have so many carepages comments yet to read. I’m over a week behind.

I don’t know what to say. Simply put, your kind words, prayers and encouragement are overwhelmingly comforting. This will be a bumpy road, but there are endless reasons to pursue it with courage. I trust in the healing power of God, and I can feel your trust in His power as well.

With the surgery, chemo treatment, and strong medications, I feel I’ve been asleep for three weeks. Please forgive me for being out of touch. I thank Mike with all my heart for keeping you posted on my progress. What a gift he is to me. Today feels like it will be a good day, but I must take one day at a time.

I am slowly healing from the surgery, with the helping hands of my wonderful sisters and Mike’s mother. They have been at my side for days. (Thank you Carolyn, Catherine, and Sharon)! And the food, cards and gifts that friends and family have been brought to the house have been wonderful. Thank you.

Until my next update, God bless you all. I ask God that the forces of your prayers bring us all closer in union with our creator who gives life.

Love to you all,
Maureen

A person whom I worked for recently sent me an email yesterday and it contained this scriptural phrase...The sun is coming up and God is in control so let's rejoice in the Lord! What a positive statement. And as you journey through this day may you be encouraged that you are not walking alone. Remember that even though we want to have everything done and over with, it will be tiny steps forward. And there will be days when it's tough and you feel down and out...that's o.k. to have those days with the hope that the next day will be better and brighter. I will be going up to visit my folks this weekend to celebrate my dad's 86th birthday (86 years young we always tell him)and we will be celebrating "life."

As I ride into work each day, I try to pray and lift you in prayer, so as my day has started so may yours be off to a good start. My gift of free prayers continues...and will continue for as long as they are needed.

Now with a great big smile on your face know that many people care about you, are praying for you and sending thoughts to let you know that you are going to make this journey, one day at at time. You have a dynamic husband who will give you tons of support, that I am sure of.

Maureen, regrets we have not yet met, but my parents just think the world of Mike and you.

Mike and I go back to Olson Hall at USD where I was his Resident Assistant and he was a very bushy haired freshman from Chamberlain. Many interesting stories, some which resulted in me being placed on super secret probation by the Dean of Students...

Hope to get to AZ and retell the stories now that so many years have passed and the stories can become tall tales.

Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Hi to Mike

Best to you..Scott Christensen, Sioux Falls

You're BAAAAAAACK!!!

Hi Maureen - it's so good to hear from you! The Almond Joy must have given you a sugar buzz.

Please let me know when you run out of sisters to visit with you, and I'll step in. What would we do without our huge families???

I know you can hear and feel our prayers.
Love, Pat and Kathy Hennesy

It was great to see Maureen for a few minutes yesterday - she was
sitting in the kitchen listening to me brag about my new grandson. More than anyone I know, Maureen always makes ME feel special, when all I want to do is let her know how special she is to me, to all of us. This is only one of her amazing gifts - her capacity to care about others.
Maureen, EAT and rest and know you are so well loved! Vicki
