This weekend was devoted to wrapping up Christmas-related shopping, mainly for things that need to be shipped. Once chemo starts Tuesday, it will all be behind me. I've been driving myself around cautiously (since kicking the pain killers - yea!), and performing short errands.
The house is also beginning to look like Christmas, with lights, decorations and candles. The Advent wreath and nativity scene are on display, reminding us of the true meaning of the season.
Blessings to you all during this 1st week of Advent!

We just wanted to say Hi and remind you again that our prayers are being sent daily on your behalf. Sounds like you've had more rough times with low hemogloblin, etc. Just read some of your messages posted and found about Grandma Casey (Lois). I am so sorry to hear the news, I'll have to call Sharon and Terry with our sympathies. Take care and know that we are always thinking positive thoughts for you as you heal. Sending love from Sioux Falls! Kathy Miller
Hi Mike and Maureen! We are sitting in the lobby of the Club House Hotel on Louise, warming ourselves. We went to church, to Perkins (for Grandma Casey, of course...she loved their pancakes!), then to the grocery store. We about froze going from the parking lot to the store to the parking lot. We are such wusses, when it comes to the cold. We will venture over to Dick and Bev's in a little while to make some plans for Mom's funeral mass. If you would like to suggest a special song or prayer for her, just let me know. It will be a way for you two to be here in spirit. We know Maureen has another chemo treatment on Wednesday, and believe me, you will be lifted up in prayer once again. We send hugs and much much love to you all! Auntie Kathy
Hi Maureen & Mike! I just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you all. Sad news about Grandma Casey. Courtney and I are headed up to South Dakota on Tuesday morning. I hope everyone is arrives safely because the weather is bad...so ironic since Grandma Casey is famous for the saying, "Well, it depends on the weather, you know." Hang in there! Love you lots! From today's reflection: The night before He died, Jesus told us that “He is the vine, we are the branches” (John 15:5). And on this first weekday of Advent, Isaiah promises that “the branch of the Lord will be luster and glory” (Isaiah 4:2) – that is, we will be. That glory begins through our begging: “Lord, I am not worthy, but say your healing word, Come!” (Matthew 8:5-11) “God our Lord wished to let us know how much we ARE, IF we place our confidence in the Creator of all things, whose hand it is that makes us strong when perils are encountered for His love.” (Francis Xavier) We're sorry to hear about your loss of Mike's grnadmother and our prayers continue dwon the street for you and your family. Grandma Casey Story, Erin Devitt
Hi Mike & Maureen...A quick Grams C. story... I recall sitting in Grams' kitchen in Madison the weekend that you were getting married. Mike and Collin were there and a few others I'm sure. In any event I recall (I was probably 10 yrs. or so...) Grandma saying to Mike, "your friends... they're not going to be drinking BEER are they??". It was quite funny as Collin was already covering saying, "no Grandma, they wouldn't do that!". At about that time Mike chimed in..."Grandma, of course they are...it's a wedding!". Or, something along those lines. I will never forget that moment, it struck me as quite funny. Collin covering Mike, Mike stepping up and Maureen joining our family. We will be missing you and thinking of you this week and of course be celebrating Grams' life. ~Erin
Best wishes for this next challenge! Dick Casey
Hi Maureen: Thanks for your prayers for our Mom. I know that she thought the world of you, and the more she got to know you, the more she realized that it was Mike and the whole Casey family that had done pretty well for itself when you joined the family! Our thoughts, prayers and best wishes are with you this week as you undergo your next chemo therapy! We love you immensely, and wish you the peace of Christ! Dick and Bev
I just came from the 7 pm Mass at Christ the King, which is the parish Grandma Casey belonged to. Father Mike Griffin (who was present at her passing) offered prayers for her soul during the Eucharistic prayer. The piano accompanist happened to be a friend of mine who has kept up with and written on this site, Nancy Gerdes. She played all gospel tonight: "Find Us Ready, Lord" and "I Rejoiced When I Heard Them Say: Let Us Go To the House Of The Lord." Grandma Casey's speedy delivery on angels' wings to the most holy Trinity will be hastened through the many prayers in various parishes, but mostly by how she lived her life and her faith. We are very sorry to hear of her passing, but rejoice that another Casey saint is in Heaven (or soon there) to pray for all of us, in our many needs. Now she will know everything about what's been happening and will surely have some clout with the Divine Physician, Maureen, for your complete recovery. God bless the entire family. Thinking of the Caseys, Judy Rex
Maureen, so very glad to hear that you've been able to be out and about and hopefully having some holiday fun. We'll be sending lots of prayers and love your way tomorrow as you go for your next chemo round - one more down!! More prayers and love to all the Caseys in remembrance of Mike's grandma. If she was like the rest of the family, I have no doubt that she was one amazing woman. Thanks for taking the time to keep us all connected - we miss you! XO, Judy |
Another fan in heaven, rooting for Maureen! Courtney Powell
Hi Maureen, Mike and boys, I was just reading through the message board and seeing all the nice messages people are sending about Grandma Casey, as well as some funny memories, and it got me to thinking. You know Grandma was always up to watching a little sporting action. I would probably say football was her favorite...she wasn't a die-hard, but I know I walked into her apartment in Sioux Falls a few times back in the day to find a game on the TV. The other thing I remember about Grandma was how she was always saving stuff for a "good occasion." One time my mom got her new luggage because hers was very old and ratty, and the next time we went to pick her up for a trip to Chamberlain, there she was with her old ratty luggage again! My mom was a bit ticked off about this and asked, "Lois, where's your new suitcase?!" "Oh, I'm saving it for good," was Grandma's answer. :) So how do these stories fit together? Well, with all the prayers going up for Grandma Casey in parishes and from families and friends this week, I can see her sitting up in heaven and stashing those prayers away for "something good." And I'm willing to bet that "something good" is for Maureen's chemo treatment this week! And she'll be up there watching over you and cheering you on! (Just make sure that when you and Mike are in the huddle working on your game plan that he lifts his leg up during the kiss like he used to do during the backyard football games in Chamberlain...) :)

Dear Family, We are so sorry for this huge loss to your entire family. May the memories you have of her remain in your hearts always. Just want you to know Mike how much we love you and support you in losing your Grandma. I think about what a great father your Dad is and how much she must have influenced who he is and that that legacy was passed to you and now from you to your children. I'm thankful for her life and I didn't even know her!! Wished I could have and hope I will learn about her. Maureen you are on/in/under/over and around my heart as you think about going in tomorrow. God is with you every moment. Love you dear sister!

A Tale from Gainsville Florida, Elaine DuBois
The Fallon clan sends their love and prayers to you and your family; Jack, Trudy, Elaine, Elise, Brian and Teri. We are gathered for Jack's 81st birthday and he is such a kick. He and I went for a walk Saturday; he in his electric wheelchair and me on foot. He was enjoying his new found freedom so much that we spent the entire day walking. At the end of the day, while at Walmart, my mother called me and laughed hysterically at my dilemma; by that time we were several miles from home, it was getting dark, the worst part is that the power on the wheel chair was almost gone. My dad looked at me with those innocent eyes, and all I could do was to smile and head for the wine aisle. Mom came by to save the day and after we checked out, she drove dad home in the van. Elise and I were charged with getting the wheel chair home. I had to ride in the wheel chair with my sister Elise walking at my side. She and I laughed all the way home at how clever my father was to get me to Walmart, his favorite place. When the last power light went out Elise was sure that we would be stranded, but I had faith and we made it home, just before dark. |
