December 19, 2007

This is Mike posting for Maureen, who's in the hospital right now. I'm attaching the text of an email I sent to our son Joe today. She's doing ok and will be back to give you updates soon.

Background. For sometime, your mom has had some discomfort in her abdomen. She attributed this to: side effects from drugs, recovery from surgery, swelling, etc. She had also been running low grade fevers, which usually would last about an hour then break. Last Saturday morning she mentioned her IP port, which is not being used but is implanted in her side, was really bothering her. By Sunday night, the area around the IP port appeared red and swollen. She went into Janicek's office Monday, saw Kelly, the nurse practitioner, who said there appeared to be an infection. She prescribed an antibiotic. By Monday night, she was running a temp and very uncomfortable. Her lower abdomen had taken a very unusual shape. Tuesday morning we awoke to some seeping from the area fka the sewchers (sp) from the surgery. Alarmed, we called Janicek who had us go into the ER. He decided to go into surgery and look at what the problem was. As he suspected, an infection had developed around the vaginal area and spread all the way across her abdomen to the IP port. He cleaned the area and removed the IP port (yea!). He said the infection was confined and didn't see any other problems. Maureen has an open wound which they need to continue to flush and treat w/ antibiotics. The fevers are gone. As we speak, she's getting 2 units of blood as she continues to be borderline anemic. A CT Scan was also done yesterday. Although I've not discussed this directly w/ Janicek, my understanding is nothing showed up there to be of concern. Maureen will be in the hospital a couple days so they can watch her. Her spirits are very good and she's relieved the IP port is gone. JP, Connor and I all visited last night. It was so touching to hear JP lecture his mom on "the power of positive thinking". I hope he's carrying this "power" to finals with him this week!

Hope is like a balloon, it cannot soar to the heavens if you hold it on a string. Nancy McFarland
Maureen, I just read Mike's update on your condition and was sorry to hear that you are in the hospital. But that is great news that they removed the IP port. A day at a time and things will keep healing. Maureen you are such an inspiration and I know that you will beat this. You need to continue to have hope. Wishing you an abundance of new hope and strength to last throughout the days until you are well again. It is just not fair that such a wonderful, loving, giving person like you should be having to go through this. Wishing you a speedy recovery. You continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Nancy McFarland

Hello Maureen Ann Weimann
The Data Security team has been reminiscing about several good stories from your years in St. Paul. One of my favorite is how Terry used to drive you crazy by sitting down and placing his notebook and papers just a little off-kilter just to see how long it took before you couldn't take it any more and would reach each over and straighten it up for him. I know that I wasn't part of the security team in those days but I remember spending quite a bit of time with you in team meetings talking about DB2 security, among other things.
I am sorry to hear you are back in the hospital but wanted to wish you a quick recovery. I will definitely be sending some prayers your way. Take care. Ann (Pihart) Weimann

Holiday prayers Lisa Lavely
Maureen - Sorry to hear you are back in the hospital, but it is so comforting to know you have such wonderful caretakers and medical staff. I said a special prayer for you this morning on my drive to work - that seems to be the only quiet time of the day! It was a beautiful morning with the sun rising over the mountains & I was listening to a wonderful holiday CD, so I was in the perfect setting to send some positive thoughts to my good friend! I am going to send you a copy of the holiday CD too, it is one of my favorites.
Hope you are back home very soon!
Love, Lisa

Merry Christmas Maureen! Joan Lentner
I will be leaving for up North to spend time with my elderly parents and family members so I won't be able to email till I return at the very end of the month. But that won't stop my prayers. They will be going every single day...it's rough for you but I'm praying that your Christmas will be wonderful.
You have had a very difficult earthly journey these past few months but be assured that you have gone forward one step at a time...and one day at a time and you are making it. The prayers and God's blessings and love are sustaining you and giving you all that you need. I can almost see the prayers from everyone flooding heaven in petition for "Maureen"...and they are being answered.
I will be praying extra hard for that great Christmas time with your family...so you feel good and can enjoy it.
Christmas Blessings to you Maureen.

P.S. you are an inspiration to so many and it makes me think about my pain and not complain about it.

My Amazing Sister!! Theresa Schaefer
Once again Maureen you are my hero! Your strength continues to amaze me!! You are continually in my thoughts, and I'm sending you lots of love from Madison! I'm also batting for JP to sail through finals! I'm sending prayers for his concentration and focus when taking his tests. You've raised a strong individual who seeks to comfort rather than to be comforted. I love you all!! Keep getting well. Love, Theresa

Bumps in the road Patrick Goetzinger
Mike and Maureen -
Bumps in the road spoil an otherwise smooth ride and are extremely frustrating. However, the bumps serve as a reminder you are still on the road and getting closer to the destination of full recovery. Christmas wishes from the Goetzinger's and Grogan's to the Casey and Green families. Cheers.
Pat Goetzinger
